From Shale to Shore: Midstream as a Strategic Asset
Written by Catherine Brown, Head of Investor Relations, Energy Council
Published 30 September 2025
Key Takeaways
-
- North America’s midstream network is the backbone of domestic energy security and global export growth.
- Long-term contracts, disciplined capital allocation, and innovative financing drive inflation protected returns.
- From LNG exports to AI driven demand and carbon solutions, midstream is adapting to future energy needs.
From a broad energy perspective, global oil and gas markets are experiencing regionally specific fluctuations in demand and investment. While upstream exploration and downstream refining often dominate headlines, the midstream sector, remains the backbone of energy delivery to global markets.
At the recent Energy Capital Assembly in New York, leaders from EIV Capital, Lazard Asset Management, and Argo Infrastructure Partners highlighted how institutional capital, private equity, and innovative financing structures are fueling a new era of infrastructure buildout. One recurring theme was that midstream assets are increasingly valued for their stable cash flows, inflation-linked revenues, and ability to deliver reliable returns even during commodity price volatility.

Scale and Strategic Importance
North America’s midstream system is the largest and most sophisticated in the world. The Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) Foundation's reports that the U.S. alone operates more than 2.6 million miles of pipelines, and when combined with Canada, the region represents nearly half of global midstream market capitalization. This infrastructure enables roughly 12 million bpd of crude oil production and over 100 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas.
U.S. LNG export terminals on the Gulf Coast have become essential to Europe’s diversification away from Russian supply and to Asia’s rising demand for reliable natural gas. By linking domestic production with global consumers, the system strengthens U.S. geopolitical influence while providing importing nations with supply stability.
Fill in the form below to access the full insight.
Conclusion
As global demand for U.S. exports expands and domestic industries rely on secure, scalable energy networks, midstream’s role in supporting both energy security and industrial competitiveness is deepening. With fee-based revenues and disciplined capital management, the sector delivers resilient cash flow across cycles while offering investors stable income and downside protection. These themes will be in focus at the North America Energy Capital Assembly in Houston on October 22–23, where executives and investors will assess how capital is being deployed across this critical value chain.
